Disturbingly Intense Racism at Breitbart.com

cross-posted from Alegre's Corner
Today Drudge Report ran the headline "'Black national anthem' stirs controversy in Denver..." Drudge linked to a video hosted a Breitbart.tv, that has received intensely racist feedback. Companies, including Microsoft advertise on that site and should be made aware.

What's even more sickening is that all comments are screened and approved by a moderator. They are so distasteful that I will not repeat them here. Naturally, they dragged Senator Obama and guns into the dialog as if there was some sort of connection.

People on this site know that I'm not exactly in the Obama fan club, but that type of racist BS must be addressed forcefully.

Sure, those bigots can say what they please, but companies like Microsoft should not be associated with hatred. I contacted some of the people that I work with at Microsoft already, and ask that you all do the same to rightly inform advertisers about what is on that site.

I saw that today and did not know how to take it.  I think that it should be ignored.  Racist like to be noticed.

In fact, there were. Alegre said this:

Well Said Owl!  (0.00 / 0) [delete comment]
IP Address: 70.108.12.220
Might be handy if we could dig up some contact info (advertising department) for the advertisers on that hateful site, and post it in this diary as an update.  Like Microsoft for instance.

Are you insinuating that we are racists?

No, I was talking about the racist comments on breitbart.com.  The lady was just trying to be artistic and to get attention to get people to buy her song. I think she was very egotistical.

Re: Disturbingly Intense Racism at Breitbart.com (2.00 / 3)

There would have been no problem if she said what song she was going to sing in advance. People are very sentimental and well... nationalistic about the anthem. It's one of those tinderbox issues like flag burning.

But there is no excuse for the racism. None at all.

Ugh. I feel dirty now, I'm sorry. It was unexpected and very good to see. It makes me think that perhaps we haven't gone too far to be brethren again once this whole mess is over.

Re: Disturbingly Intense Racism at Breitbart.com (2.00 / 2)

I refuse to give them the web hits, but maybe if we work together and find out exactly which advertisers are there, we can create letters sent to each advertisers with those quotes, something along the lines of "hey, now that I know you pay money to sponsor this type of moderated dialogue, I now know who I won't advertise with."

oh my god... (2.00 / 2)

it is SICK over there! Absolutely SICK!

Here are a few brief hits:

Let's see here. Blacks can sing the black national anthem but whites can't fly a Confederate Flag.

The answer:

All Whites need to get a Legal Concealed Carry Permit. We can stop racism on our own!

(mary right seems to be one of the worst!)

It is like this, any white person who would vote for a black to run the U.S. needs their head examined.

Dttp:/DELETED/Obama_more_family_picture s.htm

Are you starting to understand the old southern term, Uppity Blacks?

owl06 is right! If there are legit advertisers on this site, they NEED to be TOLD of this NOW!

The gun permit comment is the first one that I read. It's a borderline provocation to violence.

Also... (none / 0)

I heard this "anthem" earlier. I was stunned but it was done beautifully.

I do think it was wrong to do it then, especially now because it just draws MORE attention to the whole race crap which Obama has to keep fighting.

Now we need a good "inartful" Wes Clark comment to blunt this in the media.  ;)

Re: Also... (2.00 / 3)

No. NO NO NO NO.

No.

Anyone having an issue with the "black national anthem" truly needs their heads examined -- for lack of education.

Seriously. This song is more than 100 years old. When the country was clearly segregated between blacks and whites it made sense to call it a "national anthem" but it's not like there's a competition going on, or that one negates the others.

From wikipedia

"Lift Every Voice and Sing" was first performed in public in Jacksonville, Florida as part of a celebration of Lincoln's Birthday on February 12, 1900 by a choir of 500 schoolchildren at the segregated Stanton School, where James Weldon Johnson was principal.

Singing this song quickly became a way for African Americans to demonstrate their patriotism and hope for the future. In calling for earth and heaven to "ring with the harmonies of Liberty," they could speak out subtly against racism and Jim Crow laws--and especially the huge number of lynchings accompanying the rise of the Ku Klux Klan at the turn of the century. In 1919, the NAACP adopted the song as "The Negro National Anthem." By the 1920s, copies of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" could be found in black churches across the country, often pasted into the hymnals.

Wingers may go nuts, but by going nuts are showing their ignorance. They should be mocked, disdained, educated and so forth, but not obliged.

There is nothing wrong with this song. This isn't black nationalism, this is American black history. Anyone saying otherwise might as well don the white hood and be done with it.

It's Drudge's News Source of Choice (2.00 / 1)

Drudge routinely links to them because they are supposedly unbiased, unlike the AP and Reuters.

If we could drag this out in the open, it might end the perception that they are as legitimate a news feed.

they are very selective about what wire stories that they carry and what videos they post. Breitbart is also funded by a right winger.

Good God. I know these people exist but getting them all together like that is really horrifying. Couldn't somebody just decorate the site with burning crosses and white sheets.

Let it come out. Let the bright light of day shine on those things that run into cracks and crevises when the dark is lifted.

The woman who sang this here in Denver is someone I have seen maybe a dozen times.
I have heard her sing it. Was it a political message? You bet.
Our Mayor condemned it(Welcome to Denver)..She is not backing down..but many Here are responding with a yawn...and the backlash to the backlash is giving me whiplash..
